Preface to Soils of Arkansas

Arkansas, the Natural State, has a diverse array of geologic, topographic, physiographic, ecologic, and aquatic features, all of which have contributed in some way to the development and present characteristics and productivity of the soils in the state. There are numerous prominent industries in Arkansas that heavily rely on the soil resources present in the state, namely production agriculture, timber, and tourism. Soils of Arkansas was conceived to provide a wide audience - from policy makers to natural resource planners to educators to students to the citizens of Arkansas and even to visiting tourists - with a basic exposure to Arkansas’ soil resources.

The information compiled in this publication about the soils of Arkansas is a product of efforts from many soil scientists throughout the state over the last 50 years or so. A mix of historic and contemporary images has been included in this publication to document the uniqueness of Arkansas’ soil and other resources.

The soils of Arkansas need to be protected, conserved, and/or used in ways that are sustainable so that future generations can benefit from the soil resources that the Natural State has to offer.

Special thanks are extended to all of those who participated in the collection of information and images included in this document and to those that reviewed this publication.
